1999 Jokers Wild - South Africa
by Richard Hooper, Columnist

The annual Jokers Wild Tournament was held over the weekend of the 25th and 26th of April at Paintball City in Germiston, just east of Johannesburg.

The tourney was run on three separate fields, varying from a VC Village to Sup' Air Ball.  The tourney attracted some of the best teams in the country, with a total of 14 entries being received.  This was considerably less than last year or the year before, which attracted a total of 18 teams.  The main reason for this was to have the tourney run quickly, and without having to play into the night, (it has been known to happen).

The team from furthest away came from cape Town, and the closest from Germiston.  Turn out at the tourney was spectacular, with spectators watching virtually every game on all the fields.  Games were run at the same time on all three fields.  This took a great amount of organization, and plenty of radio contact.  Games were played according to strict NPPL rules, and were played on a center flag format.

The first few games were absolute chaos, the weather was cold, and rain threatened to pour on us the whole weekend.  Luckily, it held off, and the day improved.

The most impressive game of the tourney was Cane Rats (Durban) vs. Team Renegade on the village field.  A player from Renegade managed to crawl in right behind the Rats, and took four of them before they knew what was happening.  What made this really amazing, was the fact that the player (Bruce) leopard crawled the full length of the field, approximately 200M.

All in all, the tourney was one of the best yet, with total prize value at R20 000.  Among the prizes were JT Flex-7 Goggle systems, JT rave 600 Gloves, RP Scherer watched, and about 40 cases of RP-Scherer paint.

Final positions for the tourney including total points were as follows:

1st - Close-Up 271pts
2nd - Venom  264pts
3rd - Cane Rats 246pts
4th - Evil  232pts
5th - Renegade 192pts
6th - Red Mercury 165pts (best up and coming team)
7th - Overkill 162pts
8th - Dune Rats 137pts
9th - Bounce  125pts
10th - Body Snatchers 70pts
11th - Bloemfontein Vipers 62pts
12th - Dog Unit 51pts
13th - Team Max 47pts
14th - Komodo Dragons -7pts

All in all, the tourney was a great success.  A special thanks goes to Team Animals, who marshaled the tourney, along with numerous others and myself.

Lets hope next year, we see Venom in the number one spot.
(I'm not being biased……………really).
