GWS Hawaii - Coverage from Oahu

Dan Bonebrake, photo courtesy of Jason Knudson        Oahu, Hawaii was the location of the last Great Western Series Major for 1999.  Paintball in paradise would probably be the best way to describe the scenic fields, located a short distance from the Turtle Bay Hilton on the North side of Oahu.  With most of the fields located right next to the beach, it was possible to take a quick dip before your next game.

10 man event on friday, photo by Sean Takeda        There were a good number of teams (over 30), with a handful from Hawaii themselves which included locals, the X-men and Combat Crew.  The event started on Thursday, beginning with the Stock event.  Mike Cassady of Component Concepts providing stock guns to players who didn't have pump guns.  From there, the format was as usual, 10-man rookie/novice/amateur on Friday, and 5-man rookie/novice/amateur on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a Luau, sponsored by Stealth Paintballs on Sunday evening.

Vendors from AKALMP showing their paintball goods, photo courtesy of Jason Knudson        Many vendors were also on hand showing off their goods.  Setup in a large tent next to the Sup'Air field were John and Rita Gregory from JT, AKALMP, Paintball Junkies, Stealth Paintball, and Cobra Paintball just to name a few.  Max Attack was also on hand with "the Air Guy" doing the High Pressure Fills and services.

Banyan trees, giving the Blair Witch effect on the field       Many of the fields were unlike ones that players had ever seen before.  With the Supair field being on long grass, another field consisting of heavy brush and foliage on another, and this one (pictured) consisting of large Banyan trees, players were in for a treat as they got to experience something completely different.

With all of the events running as planned, there were only a few minor incidents with players on the field.  There was an incident of overshooting in a game, which resulted in a fight off of the field.  A few players were permanently banned from the GWS series as a direct result.
