Cobra Angel LCD Review
by Greg Lund

My first experience with Cobra Paintball’s version of the Angel was at the 1999 Dallas NPPL. I was walking through the vendor tent, when I came upon the WDP tech booth. What I saw sitting on the table was perhaps one of the most breathtaking paintball guns I have ever seen. It was a black anodizing with a reddish maroon brushstroke with silver outlines. The milling was very unique, as there was no fancy slashes or grooves, just a nice clean line from front to back, as if you were looking at nicest pair of legs you have ever seen, your eye just followed the flow of the gun. The breech was milled with 2 oval shaped holes right above the bolt, and the top was emblazoned with a nickle Cobra logo. Truly, a very impressive start.

I sat down at the booth to chat with the man at the table. I find out that the mans name was Chris, and that he owns and operates a small paintball store in Oceanside, CA, and that this was his new custom version of the Angel. Now, my first question for him was what separates this gun from the Eclipse and the Dark Angels seen everywhere at that time. His answer was simple… These guns are 100% custom built to the buyers specifications, and built by his own hands. He proceeded to go in depth of what he does different to his guns to warrant the higher price tag, and in the following lines of this review, I will relay that information to you, except on his latest creation, the Cobra Angel LCD.

To begin with this review, I will tell you that I ordered my gun totally on faith. I had no idea what the body was to look like, or what really to expect other than that this gun will ROCK. I ordered my gun in mid October, 1999, and I was among the first to order. After a 6 month wait riddled with numerous problems with WDP, the Anodizer, and the machinest, as well as several phone calls to Cobra driving Chris and Walter crazy with “Is my gun ready, YET?”, my gun finally arrived. I came home from work to find a LARGE box with my name on it. I carefully opened it and took out the WDP LCD ANGEL box. As I opened it, it could see the gleaming light reflecting off of brand new anodizing, and the smell of a BRAND NEW GUN…. There is nothing better. I pulled my gun out of the box for a thorough inspection, and what I saw was the same basic, clean lined body, reminiscent of his original gun. The anodizing was very nice, no runs, no blemishes, just a clean coat of silver interrupted with dark green brush strokes. I was impressed. The next thing to check was the barrels. I unwrapped them to find an exceptionally light, ported barrel, matching my gun perfectly with the same anodizing and same clean lines.

Overall, this gun is perhaps the most graceful of all the custom Angels out there. It is very simple looking, and just oozes quality and pride in workmanship.
But after having several pretty guns, and only a few that truly lived up to their looks, it was time to take this puppy for a test drive.  To begin the test drive, I will tell you what I got with the gun. The standard upgrades that come on all Cobra Angels are a Cobra Bolt, Cobra SS Hammer, Cobra breech knob, an Infinity Barrel, and  a Cobra Barrel. In addition to this, I got 2 more Cobra barrels with different bore sizes, a double and single trigger, intellifeed, and an Armageddon air system.

When I arrived at the field, I bought a case of marballizer, gassed up, and went to the chrono with all my tools to set up a gun. All I did was waste my time digging them all out. I fired over the Chrono…280…282…280…284. WOW. This is out of the box, I did not touch the gun with any allen keys. Next, I emptied a hopper as fast as I could pull the trigger, which those of you that know me, is pretty damn fast. This gun ate it up… no breaks, no spikes, no dropoff. The intellifeed kept up with my frantic trigger action. OK, this is at the chrono… lets see how it does on the field.

GAME TIME…. I slid into my bunker seconds after the whistle blew. Potential targets running this way and that. I found that snap shooting with this gun is like butter, I picked 3 guys off on the breakout… for my next  move, I chose a really bad bunker, small, with a lot of lanes for the enemy to get you with.. so I tucked in and played that bunker. The Cobra LCD is extremely light, and very maneuverable. I found that switching hands to shoot is easy, and that snap shooting is a breeze. The accuracy of this gun is incredible, every ball went right where I put it, one right after the other in rapid sucession. Hell, I hit one guy on his barrel TWICE in the same group. I was VERY IMPRESSED.

The next part of my review, I will cover the Cobra Bolt and Cobra Barrel.

The Cobra Bolt is perhaps the best upgrade you can get for your gun. It is custom fit to your breech for maximum efficency. Also, it is not a venturi. It is an open face, single hole bolt. Now, I don’t know much about physics, but this thing is great. I compared it to my stock bolt, and the velocity jumped 30 fps when I put the cobra bolt in, and the accuracy was visibly better.

The Cobra Barrel is equally impressive. It is a sleek design, with ports running up the sides, and a few simple lines machined into it for cosmetic purposes. This barrel is super quiet, very accurate, and extremely light when compared to a boomstick. Also, it is rather inexpensive. You can get almost 2 Cobra barrels for the price of one boomstick, and sacrifice no shooting quality. I will go so far as to say it shoots as well as a boomstick.

As for cons for this gun, I found very few. The only one that really comes to mind is that the old skool viewloader revolutions are a real pain to get on and off. Also, I find that the on/ off switch that replaces the plug can be bumped, turning the gun off when you are sliding into bunkers. But that’s it. Everything else on this gun lives up to its reputation, and more importantly, its price tag.

To finish, the customer service at Cobra is OUTSTANDING. They always have an answer to your problem, and will fix anything wrong with your angel promptly, and completely. If you have a Cobra LCD, you have a LIFETIME WARRANTY on consumable parts and labor. Chris is EXREMELY friendly, and very knowledgeable when it comes to his guns. To get ahold of Cobra, the number is (760) 630-4698.

See you on the field!!!
