I Spy – an editorial from

This editorial section was created to inform you the Paintball Players from around the world about things within the sport the way I see it. As many of you already know, I have been around the industry for quite a few years now, and have seen the goods, the bads, and all the changes which have made this sport what it is and isn't today. I feel readers can benefit from this section because it brings foward the way I read, understand, and interpret the way things are running in the paintball industry today.
Buying
equipment, especially for the first time player, can be a fustrating and
expensive ordeal. I know this is nothing new to many players in the
industry, but it is something which I quite frequently get asked with the
first time players. "How much should I spend on equipment?"
"What is the best stuff to buy on the market?" "Is it better to muy
a cheap gun and fix it up, or buy a gun with everything on it?" To
start off, the most important thing to keep in mind when buying equipment
is how much can you afford to spend. Alot of players don't
realize how expensive paintball stuff can be, and how much it actually
costs until they recieve their credit card bill which they can't pay off.
I
have seen too many people buy "the best" or what they believe to be the
best in equipment when they can't afford to buy it. Many players
believe the more expensive the gun/equipment, the better it must be so
they go and spend way beyond their means. The best way to see what
is right for you is to first off, calculate how much you can afford to
spend on equipment. Next, look at the paintball guns in your spending
range, and check them out. When you are at the field, don't hesitate
to ask other players if you can look at their guns. Most players
that I know are honored to let other people see their stuff. Even
ask them if you can shoot it. Looking at other players equipment
is the best way to see multiple variations of different guns setup different
ways.
Look
into any aftermarket accessories that you may have/ want to purchase.
For example, if you are going to buy an Autococker, many players would
suggest that you would need a roc, ball detent, etc (all features which
come with the new 98 cockers by the way). Too many people want to
get items for their gun "just because the other players have it".
Ask your local airsmith what you actually need (if anything) to make the
gun functional. As far as other paintball equipment such as your
mask, loader, guppies (pods) harness, etc., don't forget to add that stuff
in as well.

Paintball Story
By Captain - Richard Chown
Team - Xtreme Mayhem
Xtreme Mayhem Vs SPS
The day began when we met are opponents (Special Paintball Services) at TheSouth West Paintball Center in Cornwall England.
It
was a damp day so we were wearing waterproofs under are overalls. The center
has a nice area of woodland and was known it was going to be are day as
we train in are near by woods and know what to expect. Before the
game began we walked to playing field and spotted key positions were we
could cover but he only problem was that the other team were cover
pretty well. We went back to are hut and were
set to go. The whistle blew we had the formation 1 going for the
flag, 3 giving cover in mid-field and 3 defense.
We
ran down to the barricades and could here that SPS were near by firing
rounds off just for the hell off it. Three of their team were we just lying
behind a fallen tree. I just giggled and hit the tree a few times from
my amazement they got up and ran, I was just about to aim up when suddenly
Firefight were coming towards me from all directions. I stated to
crawl back, midfield could see this and gave me cover. One of my team members
was running down the wing and was just about to dive when he was shot.
Defense
mean will had a total different problem, somehow SPS had come to around
to are base they had come though a little path that we did not know about
then suddenly Adrian comes running past and shots 2 of them. We had about
2 mins to go and 4 persons left we just counter attacked their base, me
being shot in the process whilst Jamie captures the Flag and runs with
it
for his life. Overall when we got to the pits it was game that
we could have won better, communication being the main priority.

Rhino Regulator from KAPP
Like the Budd Orr rock, this mini reg is about
3 inches long and is everything the rock is in a smaller package.
The one advantage is that you can rebuild it without removing it from your
gun. It supposedly has a faster charging rate than the its big brother
from Budd Orr. MSRP is around $60 for black, $65 for chrome (for
you show freaks). You can get them directly from KAPP by calling
them at (707) 571-1077
AKA External Adjuster cap for the
Budd Orr Inline Reg
AKA Performance Paintball and Leads Metal Products
have created an external velocity adjuster for the Worr Games Products
Inline regulator. This neat looking end cap allows you to adjust
the pressure from 100-600 psi by simply turning the allen screw on the
end. MSRP is around $50. You can order it from Lead Metal Products
by calling (317) 631-7200.

Tips for the first times players : A newbies day out on the field.
I recently
took a friend from work out to play paintball. I could tell he was
a little nervious as well as anxious to get out and do some shootin.
He came prepared by bringing lots of water and appropriate old beat up
clothes (ones which he wouldn't mind getting dirty). I lent him my
Automag, goggles, and gloves. He also got a camo jersey from one
of my friend Russ, so he was good to go.
"Game
ON" I yelled, as we started his first game of speedball. Jason ran
into place and frantically started ripping off balls like an amatuer trying
to get to his bunker. "Hit" he yelled after a few minutes of frantic
firing. A few things that I noticed was that he was standing out
in the open, giving his opponents many opprotunities for pot shots.
I told him to tuck in a little, making it harder for the opponent to have
a decent shot. I also told him to not always come up in the same
spot, because a good opponent will be waiting to take you out.
"Game
ON" I yelled as we started the 2nd game. Jason, destined not to get
out as easy this time, ran up on the bunker, dug in, and started a great
exchange of paint, taking out 2 of his opponents. "Good job" I yelled
to him, as I say him walking off the field, high from his first 2 kills.
I told myself, it was now time for me to play to see if he could get me
out. My friends Eric and Steve joined me, as we took on 4 opposers
with Semis, one of them being Jason. As the game started, we were
able to get 2 oppoents out quickly. I furiously looked for Jason
as I ran around one of the back barracade which covered the back of the
field. "Pow" as I let a round rip, hitting Jason in the back.
Steve shot the last guy off the field.
One
thing important thing which I told Jason was that you need to be able to
watch all angles from your bunker. This way, if someone (like myself)
trys to bunker you, you will be ready to act, and not be suprised by an
unprepared attack. We laughed as we walked off the field. Oddly
it seems that most newbies take a little longer to figure out basic strategies
to learn the game, and how to prevent getting shot early in the game.
With a few simple suggestions, Jason was playing like a pro! I think
that more experienced players should give a suggestion to the "first time
players" when they see them on the field. They should remember that
they were once there, and should try to help out when they can. This
is what keeps the game fun, and the sport of paintball alive...
Just a thought. Happy Paintball'n!!

~ Q&A for the Warlock
****************************************************************************
Q: Could you do an
article about the Evolution AutoCocker? The Smart Parts one, plz.
Thx,
Mike Scherrer
A: Hi Mike,
At last your Evolution review! I must say
that play with this gun was pure enjoyment. It is probably one of
the nicest "out of the box" Autococker I have ever played with. To
start off, the Evolution Autococker features:
| - Evolution 45 grip (nice vertical set screw
w/ brass insert)
- AA SP barrel - Beaver tail - Enlarged valve chamber (works at 350 psi) - Valve work - Some great trigger work (one of the smoothest I've pulled) - Angry 3-way (no hole in the front like the standard Autococker from Budd Orr) - Modified front gas block screw (more air flow) - Rex nelson kit (externally adjustable lug and velocity) very light spring and smooth action - Stainless pump arm and rod - Evolution body shaping including P-block - Evolution bolt w/ quick-pull pin (features one-bearing) - Polished ram - Sledgehammer reg. adjusted to lower pressure The gun I tested also had the following added to it : - Threaded timing rod
|
|
>> First off <<
I
tested the gun using RP Premium gold. First to the chrono.
285, 287, 287 fps. Amazing. I went to the firing range to take
a few more shots to find that the Evolution put every ball right on the
same spot, each accurate, each consistent.
>> On the Field <<
After
the game had started, I gave it my "rapid fire" test where I basically
fire the fun as fast as I can pull the trigger. The Evolution consistently
shot the paint all in the same area, not breaking or choping any paint.
Due to the custom trigger work at Smart Parts, it allows the player to
fire the gun at an amazing rate.
>> The Pluses <<
The
Evolution is an amazing gun right out of the box. Consistent, accurate,
smooth. The Evolution fires with a distinctive sound, leaving you
confident that you are getting a good shot everytime. It is a true
joy to play paintball with such a piece of work. Buying the Evolution
provides you with the confidence of not having to fiddle around with it
to get it shooting great.
>> The Minuses <<
If
you want a nice gun, you are going to have to pay for it. It's a
little on the high side at about $1000 retail without the 45 grips.
You have to consider how much you would spend to get all of the goodies
that come on this gun, separately, then putting them on and tuning them
yourself. If you are considering buying a gun like the Angel, be
sure to test this one out too, you might be pleasantly supprised.
Though some players might find it a expensive, in my opinion, its worth
every penny.
I hope I answered your questions Mike! Happy
paintgun hunting!!
I would like to personally thank Steve Maranzana (orig. Team Lofty) for the use of his gun, and for the facts about it. Awesome.
