Interview with Oliver Lang of So. Cal's Ironkids
by Micah McGlocklin, Guest Writer

Micah: So Oliver, how old are you?

Oliver: I just turned 17.

Micah: How long have you been playing tournament paintball?

Oliver: About 2 or so years, my memory fades some.

Micah: What teams have you played on in the past?

Oliver: My first team was the Mare Island Monkeys, out of Mare Island in Vallejo, CA.  Our 1st time out we didn't win a single game!  Then I moved up to Lofty, out of Mare Island as well.  We formed a curse of always getting 2nd place in tourneys.  I played GWS novice for the 98 season.  Then the last tourney of the year, Outta Control picked me up.  We played at our home field Mare Island for that tourney, where we were mercilessly destroyed by the So Cal Wackers (Bushwackers), a team that included the author of this piece.  I think that we were highly mismatched.

Micah: Hmm odd, I don't remember you being there, oh well.  What other teams have you been on?

Oliver: Outta Control stopped playing GWS to focus on NPPL, so some friends and I started up the Ironkids.  We pulled players from Outta Control, Paraplegic Turtles, Diggers, Krusade, Outsiders, and SC Ironmen.  We were just a throw together team to play and have fun, but we ended up doing quite well, and we drew some good sponsorships that allowed us to play all year together.  We won the GTS Houston, the GWS 10 man Series (Amateur) and we got 2nd place in GWS 5 man (Amateur), and a handful of other local tourneys.

Micah: What was the average age of the 'kids?

Oliver: We averaged 18, we were a very young team.

Micah: What position do you play on the field?

Oliver: I play sniper, and point man.

Micah: Rrrright.  Do you play anything else?

Oliver: I play wherever the team needs me the most to win the game.  I am a team player.

Micah: I see Oliver, have you always been a suck up?

Oliver: Yes, yes indeed

Micah: Wow, you have been successful at a very young age, what do you contribute to your meteoric rise?

Oliver: All the great players I looked up to as a newbie at Mare, such as my older brother Micah McGlocklin, Billy Wing, Eric Roberts, all of the SC Ironmen.  All of the KAPP guys, and all my friends that had a bit more experience than I.  As well as the Backstreet Boys and 98 Degrees.

Micah: Well you do look like a Backstreet fan.  Was it easy to get to where you are?

Oliver: No, I busted my ass.  I played walk-on every Saturday and practiced ever Sunday from the time I started playing tourneys, and I still play every weekend to this day.  I also poured every bit of money I ever received into paintball, I am hooked!

Micah: How did Outta Control do this year, their first year of Amateur A in NPPL?

Oliver: We had some rough times.  We reffed Vegas, we made the semis in Dallas, but couldn't manage anything once we got there.  Then we missed the cut in both Chicago and Boston.  Then in Orlando, we picked up some better players, and were playing much tighter as a team.  We ended up winning Orlando, and are the World Champions!

Micah: Super, and what are you plans for next year?  I have heard rumors that you are moving up to the pro level to join your brother Micah on the SC 'men

Oliver: Yes, if everything goes to plan, I hope to find myself playing for the best Pro team in the known universe.  I have dreamt about playing them since I heard about paintball, and I hope to gain more experience, and improve my game overall.

Micah: Oliver, please, enough of the brown nosing,  But seriously, what other sports do you enjoy?

Oliver: Well, I enjoy lawn bowling, croquette, and pocket billiards.

Micah: Well Oliver, who are your sponsors?

Oliver: My biggest sponsor is Big Richard at Great American Paintballs.  Also, Jt, Dye, Diggers, Warpig, Kapp, OTP, Unique, Mare Island, Paintball News, and my older brother , who works everyday to buy me stuff I under appreciate.  Oh, and the MPN for giving me this break on the interview.

Micah: Fabulous, what would you tell young aspiring paintball players wanting to break into the tourney scene?

Oliver: Never underestimate the role of fashion in the game.  Play every weekend you can afford, keep a positive attitude, don't get too cocky, and always look to get better by pushing yourself all the time.

Micah: Oliver, I am getting paged, damn women, we will have to conclude this interview.  Do you have any final thoughts?

Oliver: I know Kung-Fu

Micah: That's amazing.
