The United States Paintball League recently announced that it has received Patent Pending status from the US Patent and Trademark Office for its patent application entitled "Digital Enhancement of Paintball Competitions for Broadcast and Spectating".
The USPL owns a fifty percent interest in the patent pending technology, which was developed jointly with Bill Mills of Warpig fame. The new technology provides USPL with a distinct advantage in its efforts to air paintball competitions in an exciting and understandable manner.
Using the as yet unnamed system, USPL events will feature paintballs that are easily seen by an audience when they are fired from a player's gun. "Up until now one of the most difficult concepts to get across to the viewing public is the importance of shooting angles and 'firing for effect'" said Steve Davidson, USPL President, "but this technology answers that issue. Viewers will be able to zone right in on the action, tell who is shooting at what AND why. Its amazing how clear the tactics become once you can see all of the gun angles."
"Its very exciting to be working on this project" said Bill Mills "its giving me an opportunity to combine two of my areas of expertise - paintball and video production, not to mention computer technology. Well, three things..."
USPL will be conducting field trials of the new system during the first half of the 2000 season, and hopes to have it available for use by September or October of 2000.
